Description

This Cheeseburger Pie is a savory, hearty dish featuring a flavorful ground beef and bacon filling topped with melted cheddar cheese and a tender batter crust. Perfect for a comforting main course, it combines all the best elements of a cheeseburger in a convenient, sliceable pie.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Vegetables

  • 6 slices bacon chopped
  • 1 pound ground beef (90% lean)
  • 1/2 cup onion finely diced

Seasonings and Toppings

  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Assorted toppings such as shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and pickles

Cheese and Batter

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup baking mix such as Bisquick
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 eggs

Other

  • Cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and coat a 9 inch deep dish pie pan or regular 10 inch pie pan with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Cook Bacon: Place a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chopped bacon and cook until crisp, about 4-5 minutes. Remove bacon and drain on paper towels, reserving 1 teaspoon bacon grease in the skillet.
  3. Sauté Beef and Onion: Add the ground beef and diced onion to the skillet with the reserved bacon grease. Cook 6-7 minutes, breaking up the beef with a spatula, until browned and cooked through.
  4. Season Meat: Stir in salt, pepper, and garlic powder, cooking for an additional minute to blend flavors.
  5. Add Bacon to Meat Mixture: Return two-thirds of the cooked bacon to the skillet and mix well, reserving the rest for garnish.
  6. Assemble Pie: Transfer the meat and bacon mixture into the prepared pie pan, spreading it evenly. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top.
  7. Prepare Batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the baking mix, milk, and eggs until smooth and combined.
  8. Pour Batter Over Meat and Cheese: Carefully pour the batter mixture over the meat and cheese in the pie pan, spreading evenly if necessary.
  9. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes or until the top is golden brown and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.
  10. Add Toppings and Serve: Remove from oven and top the pie with the remaining bacon and your choice of burger toppings such as shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and pickles. Cut into wedges and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use 90% lean ground beef for good flavor with less grease; if using higher fat content beef, drain excess grease after cooking.
  • Best results come from using a deep dish 9 inch or regular 10 inch pie pan to accommodate the batter and filling fully.
  • Freshly grated cheddar cheese melts better and provides superior flavor compared to pre-shredded varieties.
