Ingredients
Scale
Main Ingredients
- 4 cups fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into bite-size pieces
- 10.5 oz. can cream of mushroom soup
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 2/3 cups crispy fried onion strings, divided
- 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly coat a 3-quart casserole dish with non-stick spray and set it aside.
- Cook Green Beans: Place the green beans in a pot filled with lightly salted boiling water. Cook them until they are fork-tender, about 10 minutes. Drain the green beans and set them aside.
- Mix Sauce: In the prepared casserole dish, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, milk, Worcestershire sauce, and black pepper until smooth and well combined.
- Combine Ingredients: Add the cooked green beans, 2/3 cup of the crispy fried onion strings, and all of the shredded cheddar cheese to the casserole dish. Stir everything to coat the green beans evenly with the mixture.
- Bake: Place the casserole dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the center is bubbly and heated through.
- Add Topping and Finish Baking: Remove the casserole from the oven and sprinkle the remaining fried onion strings evenly over the top. Return the casserole to the oven and bake for an additional 5 minutes to crisp the topping.
- Serve: Remove from oven and enjoy the casserole right away while it's warm and savory.
Notes
- Fresh green beans can be substituted with frozen green beans; just thaw and drain before using.
- You can use low-fat milk to reduce fat content without sacrificing creaminess.
- For a gluten-free version, ensure the fried onion strings and cream of mushroom soup are gluten-free.
- If sharp cheddar cheese is not available, a mild cheddar or a similar shredded cheese will work well.
- Worcestershire sauce adds a depth of flavor but can be omitted or replaced with soy sauce for a different twist.
- Make sure not to overcook the green beans initially; they should be tender but still slightly firm to avoid mushiness in the casserole.
