Ingredients
Scale
For Churros
- 1 cup water
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs
- vegetable oil (for frying)
For The Cinnamon Sugar
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
For The Chocolate Dipping Sauce
- ½ cup heavy cream
- 4 ounce dark chocolate (chopped)
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Make the Chocolate Sauce: In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream until it just begins to simmer. Remove from heat, add the chopped dark chocolate, and let sit for one minute. Stir until smooth, then mix in the vanilla extract. Set aside.
- Prepare the Churro Dough: In a medium saucepan, combine water, 2 tablespoons sugar, salt, and butter. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Once the butter is melted, reduce the heat to low and add the flour. Stir vigorously until the mixture forms a ball, about 1 minute. Remove from heat and let cool for a few minutes. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition until the dough is smooth and slightly sticky.
- Heat the Oil: In a large skillet or deep fryer, heat vegetable oil to 375°F (190°C). Be sure to maintain this temperature for even frying.
- Mix the Cinnamon Sugar: In a shallow dish, combine ½ cup granulated sugar with 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon. Set aside.
- Pipe and Fry the Churros: Transfer the churro dough to a piping bag fitted with a large star nozzle. Carefully pipe 3-4 inch strips directly into the hot oil, using scissors to snip the ends. Fry churros for about 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown, turning once for even cooking.
- Drain and Coat: Use a slotted spoon to transfer churros to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. While still warm, roll them in the cinnamon sugar mixture to evenly coat.
- Serve: Serve churros warm alongside the prepared chocolate dipping sauce for a delightful treat.
Notes
- Fry churros in small batches to avoid crowding and prevent sogginess; this helps them puff and crisp properly.
- Use a large star piping tip to achieve the classic churro ridges and ensure even cooking.
- The dough may appear separated or strange when eggs are added—keep mixing until it comes together into a smooth paste.
- To freeze churros, pipe raw dough onto a baking sheet and freeze. Fry directly from frozen when ready to enjoy.
- The chocolate dipping sauce is rich and essential for an authentic churro experience—don't skip it.
